Fishing Line

Traditionally fishing line was made from vines, the sinews of dead animals, killed for food and more recently cat gut.

Nowadays with modern manufacturing technology monofilament is widely used for all types of freshwater fishing and is available in breaking stains from as little as 8oz up to in the region of 100lb. Please note that different manafacturers and brands can provide the same breaking strains in varying diameters. This is important because it is relative to the spool capacity of your reel.fishing line

Braided lines are also widely available but these do not have the streching properties of monofilament. It's qualities provide very high knot strength and it does not weaken over time as does monofilament, particularly when exposed to light.

Wire traces are used particularly for catching fish with large teeth such as pike and for sharks in sea fishing. A short lenght of wire trace is tied to the hook and normally to a swivel which is then tied to the main monofilament.

Fly Fishing lines are completely different in characteristics. Since the fly itself is very light the line is made such that it's weight allows the fly to be cast at distance. There are a huge range of varying grades which allow flys to be cast to different distances. They are available in sinking, semi-sinking and floating so that the fly or nymph can be presented where the natural bait would normally reside.
