Hooks
Traditionally fishing hooks were made from made from bone, antlers, stone and shells
Nowadays with modern manufacturing technology they are made from a wide range of metals and alloys. Very light versions are available to the match angler for fishing with bloodworm and other small baits - these would be made of a very fine gauge wire so as not to comprimise bait presentation.
Alternatively, very strong forged versions are available for real big fish such as carp and Pike which would very quickly bend a lighter gauge hook straight resulting in a lost fish.
The Anatomy of the Hook
The diagram to the right shows the named parts - all of these parts need to be considered when making a choice because they will be specific to the type of fish you wish to catch.
At the end of the shank there is generally a choice of an eye or a spade end. In match fishing the spade end is most popular because when tied correctly it provides a more superior natural bait presentation compared to an eye. The eye type hook tends to be used more commonly with larger diameter lines where it is not practicle to use a spade end. Versions are available as singles, but for preditors on Lures or for hooking live or dead baits doubles and trebles are also available.
With the increase of commercial fisheries in the UK, barbless versions are normally part of the rules for these venues, also in match fishing it increases the speed at which an angler can catch.
