Grayling are a river fish and are quite particular about the oxygen levels in the water, which they require for survival. For this reason on many rivers they will only be found in the fastest runs over gravel or shingle.
Description
Since Thymallus thymallus is closely related to the trout and it's shape is not disimilar. Like the trout it has a very small rear dorsal fin but unlike the trout it's front dorsal fin is huge. The grayling gets it's name from the overall greyish silver colour. Despite this Thymallus thymallus is one of the prettiest river fish in the Uk, over this somewhat plain coloured backgroung there are a series of stripes parralell to its lateal line, an overall greenish gold tinge and randomly placed spots to the rear of the gill covers.
Baits
Naturally Thymallus thymallus eats insect larvae, worms, and snails it will also rise to a fly.
Fly fishing works well but Thymallus thymallus can be caught on normal coarse fishing baits available from your local tackle shop such as maggot and caster. A light stick float set up is an ideal way to present these baits.
