The dace can be found across the Uk in rivers except in Scotland. It's name is derived from an ancient English word darce which means to dart. This describes the fishes character perfectly.
Description
Leuciscus leuciscus is very similar to the chub it could easily be described as it'ts smaller cousin since they rarely reach more than 12" long.
It has a slimmer body than the chub, it's head is smaller as is it's mouth and it's caudal fin is more forked.
It's colour is mainly silver and its fins are silver with a tinge of smoked pink.
Habitat
The dace is happy in clear fast flowing rivers and streams where it will feed on small crustacaens and larvae. Fly fishing can also be utilised to catch Leuciscus leuciscus since they will, naturally rise to the surface and take flys and nymphs.
Baits
Maggot and caster is probably the best bait for Leuciscus leuciscus the latter of which will pick out bigger fish.
The best method, or should I say my favourite method would be a light stick float set up, but pole and feeder tacktics can also be used.
