Catfish - The Definitive Guide

catfish Order:OSTARIOPHYSI
Family: Siluridae
Latin Name: Silurus glanis

The Eastern European catfish has been introduced to many Uk waters and has become a much sought after target for specimen anglers.

Description

Silurus glanis is olive-green to grey/brown in colour and it's body is elongated. It's mouth is large and flattened, it has two very long barbels on it's snout and four shorter ones on it's lower jaw.

Silurus glanis grows very large in Europe and can be found up to 650lb, however the British rod caught record stands at a mere 62lb.

Habitat

Silurus glanis will survive almost anywhere as long as it has a supply of small fish for food. Therefore they can be found across europe in lakes, canals and rivers.

Baits

Silurus glanis eat all kinds of fish they will even take frogs, birds and small mammals. They tend to feed in the evening and early morning and that's the time the dedicated specimen hunter would expect good sport.

Live or deadbaits are the best baits but please be patient you won't catch one on every trip!
