Bream are by far the most hump-backed of British coarse fish. They are widespread in Uk canals, rivers and stillwaters.
Prior to the appearence of a multitude of commercial carp fisheries Abramis brama would account for the record match weights up and down the country.
Description
The body is severly hump-backed and laterally compressed the best analogy for the shape would be an oval dinner plate!
Their colour is generally an olive brown but this varies with habitat and it's belly is whitish with a tinge of silver.
Habitat
Sluggish slow moving rivers is the main habitat of Abramis brama where they are generally found in large tightly packed shoals. This is the reason for large match weights of these fish but you will only catch them in numbers if you are lucky enough to draw the right peg!!
They are also found in canals and stillwaters.
Baits
Abramis brama is a bottom feeder where naturally it will pick up worms, molluscs and crustaceans.
The best bait by far are worms but they can also be caught on bread, maggot and caster.
Grounbait feeder is the best probably the best method on rivers and large lakes but they will fall to pole and floatfishing methods elsewhere.
The Bream grow realtively large by UK standards the current record is 19lb 2oz.
